Metromix Interview with Man is Doomed

Hey all,

Check out this interview we did with Annie D’Souza for MetroMix. It is good stuff.

Oh, and come out to Sauce tomorrow for our show with Virtual CH, UltraChorus, and Athletes in Slacks. We will be melting the snow with our magma-hot dance music.

Earthlings,

The subject line lies not. It has been two years since the release of our debut Glorious Monster album, Adventures on Earth, and out of no where we just found out that the CW’s smash-hit/ flag ship show, Gossip Girl is featuring our first Glorious Monster single, In The Movies (which also has an amazing animated video, created by our good friend Chris Weller, that you can view by clicking on the link), on the season three debut which will air this coming Monday, September 14th @ 8 pm CT.

Hooray!

You may ask, “How did you get a song placed on a show like Gossip Girl??”

To which we may respond, “We don’t know, we have never watched the show (sorry CW) but we are really excited to be featured on any network tv show!! woot woot!”

So please check it out this upcoming Monday. I bet someone gets their sorry ass dumped!!!

OH, and for our fellow Minneapolis people’s, please mark October 17th as a day to get funky. That is right, Man is Doomed is playing another show. This time for free at 331 with our friends Hunting Club. Much merriment will be made.

That is all for now. May your hump day be humptastic.

So it has been too long since I posted anything on our modest blog. I apologize, but we have been swamped with ad/tv work, some of which I hope to share on this blog once it is completed and available for us to show off.

In the meantime, I am quite pleased to post our newest Man is Doomed remix (or in this case remake).

Here is the story: I was at one of those annoying piano cover bars with some of my old friends who like to indulge in such nonsense, and they started to cover the ballad from The Little Mermaid. People went crazy. They knew every word. They sang along with zeal. I was amazed at how much a room full of 20-somethings loved a song from their childhood. So the stick figures in my thought bubble started having a hoe-down, and the result was imagining One Jump Ahead from Aladdin with disco-beats, funk-guitars and nasty synths.

Listen to it here. You can also listen to our other two remixes from the same page.

Enjoy! and any of you MLPS folk please remember to join us this Thursday, July 2nd at the new 501 Club. It is electro night and we will by joined by Military Special and Nobot, who both rock big time.

Hope everyone is enjoying their summers.

Continuing our series of remixes in the funktastic style of Man is Doomed we give to you our mix of Take Your Medicine by fellow Minnesotan’s, Cloud Cult. We like the original a lot and also felt the melancholic chord turn totally catered to the intensity and drama of disco music. We took what was originally a folk-pop-rock song and made it a funky-electro affair. Check it out.

eHarmony music

People,

We write jingles by day. Hence the name of this blog being “The Jinglesmithy”. Just like a blacksmith, we are slaving away bending sound into certain shapes and sizes in our smithy all day. Back in December, we had the opportunity to demo some music for a potential eHarmony ad. We wrote a demos for it and they ended up using a folksy, Blackbird meets Landslide style piece that we wrote.

Check it out at the link below, and perhaps you will see it on tv as well, as it is currently on the air. and perhaps it will inspire you to give up your fear of commitment and learn to love and accept anothers love in return. perhaps..

Reviews of Let it Rock MID remix and Rift Magazine review

People,

We decided to do a handful of remixes of other artists in the brutally funky style of Man is Doomed. The first of these is a remix of the Kevin Rudolf song Let it Rock. We don’t listen to very much top 40 music for the obvious reasons (most of it blows) but this song stood out to us as a truly catchy pop anthem. The only problem with it was the general lack of funkiness in the production. So we added to two funkles (units of funkiness) and a dash of disco.

Listen to it and hear what the blog-o-sphere has to say at any of Arjan Writes, Ear it Now, or Sex for Ears.

also, I found another favorable review of our debut album Escape to Europa at local music magazine/blog Rift Magazine.

So check it all out.

More remixes of other songs to come over the next several weeks!

Jingles all the way

Read this really well written article I found on emusician.com.

It will teach anyone who is interested in writing/producing music for commercials the basics in a very concise and understandable way. It is a great explanation/description of the somewhat convoluted relationship between the ad world and the music world.

The best part is in the final segment where our author, Steve Skinner, points out the typical adjectives a composer will receive with a creative brief to describe the desired music for a potential ad, and how those adjectives are often the same regardless of the product being advertised. so true. amazingly true.

Read it and become smarter!!

“Let it Rock” Man is Doomed Remix

We did a remix of Kevin Rudolf’s song “Let it Rock” in the style of Man is Doomed. You can watch it (with the original video edited to our remix by Danny) here:

and you can listen to it here.

Supercenter

As some of you may or may not know, when Danny and I aren’t living our night lives as disco vigilantes battling the forces of lameness with our funky powers, we are humble jinglesmiths at our day gig. Working with our everyday partners/employers In The Groove Music we write and produce much music for ads and tv use.

The theme to Sportscenter (yes, the doo-doo-doo / doo-doo-doo melody you are humming right now), the uber-popular sports news show on ESPN, was redone in the style of ass-kicking contemporary rock a half dozen years ago by Darren Drew and Brian Reidinger, our noble bosses and lords.

Well ESPN called us again a few weeks ago looking to take the theme to another level of rockingness. They did not want us to change the theme too much, for it must still be the same memorable theme that it has been since the seventies, but they wanted us to give the theme a shot of B-12 in the ass. They wanted us to take it out of the aughts and into the teens if you will.

So what did we do?

We did this.

Escape to Europa Reviews

Hey all,

So thus far we have received many favorable reviews of Man is Doomed’s debut Escape to Europa!! Please check some of them out at:

The Needle Drop, where they boldly predict, “It’s only March, but I’m going to call this: Man Is Doomed will probably be this year’s standout electronica debut.”

or 30 Music, where critic Kevin Coss proclaims, “The new album features everything you could ever want for that sweaty dance at the club…t’s actually very impressive how much the band can do with the genre.”

also check out the blog over at Pirate Cat Radio, where they compare us to another MLPS dance musician (although I am not sure if we deserve it), “You can hate me for this one, but holy shit I love this album. It’s everything great about pop music blended with every great thing about synth/electro/dance music. In other words, it’s the new Prince.”

or The University of Wisconsin Madison paper The Badger Herald, where writer Josh Cook gives the album 4 out of 5 stars and states that “Man is Doomed has created a very strong first impression in their debut album, Escape to Europa, and the work would be a good addition to any electronic collection. The energy the trio brings to this work could just be enough to make your quilting party into one of the dancing variety.”

We also received one unfavorable review which you can read here. We are equal opportunity review pass-alongers. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. However it would seem as though our critic Hannah Morris isn’t an electronic music aficionado, as her primary criticism is that, “Despite their attempt at being original, nearly all the songs are so similar that you question where one ends and another begins.” A thought that we found ironic considering how much attention we paid to making the album have a consistent sound. In fact, multiple tracks were cut due to their general lack of consistency with the rest of the album.

Lastly, we found out that Escape to Europa was the #2 RPM add on the CMJ charts last week (out of 54 new releases), which is very exciting!!! So please keep requesting Man is Doomed on your local community or college radio station, and keep the Man is Doomed snowball of buzz a’rolling!!!
